While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

On Winning a Lottery
We don’t hear too many happily-ever-after stories about lottery winners. Often, they are portrayed as impulsive people who manage to squander all their money within years (sometimes months) of winning the jackpot. And then there are the horror stories about long-lost friends and relatives who appear out of nowhere, asking for handouts. It is not too surprising when lottery winners decide to take physical and emotional distance from their previous lives.

Gilda Greco, the protagonist of A Season for Killing Blondes, Too Many Women in the Room, and A Different Kind of Reunion, took a more measured approach after winning $19 million in Lotto 649.

Here’s her story and advice for future lottery winners:

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the six numbers on the radio. I waited until the following morning to call the Lottery Commission. Without revealing my identity, I asked them to repeat the numbers three times. While I could hear chuckling in the background, the receptionist maintained her cool, crisp voice. Convinced that I had truly won, I decided to wait one week before driving to Toronto to pick up my check.

At the time, I was teaching mathematics at a high school in Guelph, Ontario. We were in the middle of exams and a week before the end of the semester. I scrambled to get everything done and turned in my report cards one day ahead of schedule. I toyed with the idea of renting a limousine—one of my former students owned a fleet of them—but, in the end, I drove myself to Toronto and picked up the check.

I was totally unprepared for the publicity and had to rush home and phone everyone before the evening news. Had I to do it over, I would have shared the news with my mother and two close friends. I would have also have given my principal the heads-up regarding second semester. I still cringe at the four-day notice I gave before waltzing away from a twenty-five-year teaching career. Thankfully, a qualified replacement was available.

I decided to stick with my financial advisor, who provided a wealth of information and advice. My head spun with all the possibilities and challenges that lay ahead. I had already made one major decision regarding my career, but I wasn’t ready to make any other commitments. So, after two weeks of meeting with several other financial professionals, among them a tax planner and an accountant, I booked a flight to Hawaii and spent the rest of the winter there.

When I returned in early April, I was rested and ready to plan my future. I established my investment and philanthropic goals and decided who would receive money gifts. I sold my condo, donated all the furnishings, and relocated to my hometown of Sudbury, Ontario. While I could live almost anywhere, I decided to live in the same city as my widowed mother and closest friends.

I spent the next eighteen months visiting almost every place on my bucket list. My most memorable trip: an Antarctica 12-day cruise. I still have vivid memories of the amazing wildlife, especially the penguins.

To my surprise, I started to feel restless. I needed a new direction and decided to enroll in the Career Development Practitioner Program at Conestoga College. It took me two years to complete the online courses and practicum. Afterward, I opened ReCareering, a career counseling office that catered to boomers.

Six years have passed since winning the lottery. While most of my experiences have been positive ones, I have also become embroiled in three murder investigations. You can find out more by reading the novels in the Gilda Greco Mystery Series.

Advice for lottery winners...

Keep your ticket stored in a safe place until you are ready to pick up the check.

Surround yourself with financial professionals who have been highly recommended, and don’t be afraid to get a second opinion.

Prepare yourself for the pitfalls of publicity. All sorts of people will suddenly appear, hoping to benefit from your windfall. Set boundaries.

Investigate security options for yourself and your family. This is a necessary expense!

Review: A DIFFERENT KIND OF REUNION

Here's a "different kind" of cozy mystery. With a lot of suspense and tension, a lot of memory strolls, and the addition of an intriguing paranormal element, this mystery stands out. Our protagonist, Gilda, strongly but not too fondly remembers her seven months of teaching eight grade in Parry Sound, Ontario, a closely knit and sports-oriented community. Called back after the inexplicable demise of a student she taught two decades earlier, Gilda finds herself attending a seance, stumbling down Memory Lane, and puzzling out her former student's death.
