Review: Dearly Departed
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review: DEARLY DEPARTED by Hy Conrad
DEARLY DEPARTED is a truly cool cozy, truly delightful: engrossing, at times dangerous, at times light-hearted, variably romantic, humorous, wraparound comfy: the perfect kind of cozy. I must read the first in the series (TOURED TO DEATH; DEARLY DEPARTED is #2 in the AMY'S TRAVEL MYSTERY Series). Amy and mother Fanny are a pair of enterprising travel agents [and in this era of online travel booking, "enterprising" is essential). With a flair for the dramatic and outre, they're following up the first fatal mystery-road rally with a five-stop global tour to wake the late former maid, Paisley MacGregor. Several former employers will drink, dine, and commemorate the exceptional MacGregor while strewing her ashes. What could possibly go wrong? What, indeed!
Synopsis
Fanny and Amy Abel, the dynamic mother-and-daughter owners of a NYC travel agency, have just booked their biggest trip yet. But with danger in the air, the itinerary may include murder…
Paisley MacGregor, a maid to the rich, made a dying request to send all of her wealthy employers on a first-class wake to spread her ashes around the world. Amy has her suspicions about these “mourners,” especially when one has a life-threatening “accident” at the first stop in Paris. And when a mysterious American stranger tagging along with the group has his ticket punched in the shadow of the Taj Mahal, Amy knows she may have a killer on her tour.

Review: For Cheddar or Worse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review: FOR CHEDDAR OR WORSE by Avery Ames
A truly delightful crafty cozy series continues! FOR CHEDDAR OR WORSE is 7th in Avery Ames' wonderful A Cheese Shop Mystery series. There is probably no food I love more than cheese, in all its ramifications, so I am delighted to discover this series, centered on "Fromagerie Bessette," the cheese-and-wine shop of Providence, Ohio. I've often explained that I enjoy Craft Cozies for the opportunity to learn about crafts. In this series, the educational factor is cheese. How delicious!
Charlotte Bessette is the current proprietor of "Fromagerie Bessette," the shop founded by the grandparents who raised her. Her grandmother, town mayor, institutes a week-long annual Cheese Festival. When the go-to expert for cheese and wine breezes in unexpectedly, almost everybody is ecstatic. Almost--someone is not happy, and determines the expert won't be leaving town--alive. When Charlotte' s friend Erin, dairy farmer and B&B owner, is automatically suspected, Charlotte leaps to investigate.

Review: The Somewhat True Adventures of Sammy Shine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review: THE SOMEWHAT TRUE ADVENTURES OF SAMMY SHINE by Henry Cole
Sammy Shine, Hank s cherished pet mouse, becomes intrepid adventurer and pilot of his own plane, "The Spirit of Sammy," when older brother Jimmy builds a handmade remote control plane. Hank and Jimmy tussle, the controller is broken, and Sammy is on his own. His exciting adventures have just begun. Intermediate readers (upper-elementary stage) and reluctant middle-grade readers will find Sammy' s story lots of fun, and the short chapters and cute illustrations make this a good "read to me" choice.

Review: Dream Houses on the Water
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review: DREAM HOUSES ON THE WATER by Alexander Hosch
Delectable. Entertaining. Inspirational. DREAM HOUSES ON THE WATER examines residences (some for full-time living, such as the fjord home in Iceland; others weekend getaways or vacation homes) where owner-clients have worked with architects inspired by Nature, to create living spaces blended with outdoor environments, throughout the globe. The primary focus is water: lake, ocean, marshland. But the houses also merge into the environment, each in a special way. Most of these are in Europe, with the addition of South Africa, South Korea, and Chile. The iconic Pennsylvania residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (1937), Fallingwater, is also included.

Review: The Last Condo Board of the Apocalypse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review: Last Condo Board of the Apocalypse by Nina Post
This novel is an absolute gem!! I totally enjoyed every moment and every sentence. What a freewheeling world is Pothole City, the setting! It has practically everything, including an interdimensional portal admitting all kinds of monsters; a 500-unit condo complex with the amenities, which is confinement for a host of fallen angels; the lazy, good-for-nothing Destroying Angel of the Apocalypse; the CluckSnack Holding Company, purveyor of foodstuffs beloved of angels, ferrets, and domestic pets; and single-purpose angels. Pothole City also has the talented Kelly Driscoll, sole survivor of a family of skilled thieves, and now sometime paranormal hunter and protector of single-purpose angels.
This is a joyfully comic paranormal which deserves to be enjoyed. Go ahead: make yourself happy!

MOLLY'S MISADVENTURES by D.E. Haggerty: Guest Post and Spotlight

Molly’s New Year’s Resolutions
I’m usually too busy working and traveling for work to have the energy or time to make New Year’sresolutions. Besides, my life is pretty fantastic – or at least that’s what I thought. I have an awesome job as an executive assistant to a millionaire who also happens to be one of my best friends. I make good – really good – money, travel the world, and no two days at work are the same. I’ve been married for over five years and our relationship is solid. But it turns out my marriage wasn’t as solid as I thought. My husband banging his secretary in our house was a pretty big clue about that. And, okay, I’m just going to admit it, maybe I wasn’t as happy with my job as I thought I was. Not in a small way due to the fact that I’ve been suppressing my dreams of becoming a writer. So anyway, new year, new me and all that.
That’s it. I was originally going to go with the traditional 10 resolutions, but I’m starting small. Having better relationships with my divorced and somewhat bitter parents should probably be a ten-year plan. I always was a bit over ambitious.

This is my third experience with D. E. Haggerty books, having previously read Love in the Time of Murder and Murder, Mystery and Dating Mayhem. Three different books, three different heroines, three great stories.

Synopsis
I’m having the suckiest day ever. First, my father, aka Mr. Grumpy Pants, calls to say his nurse just walked out on him. Likely story. I rush home to pack only to walk in on my husband getting it on with his younger, skanky secretary. Unfortunately, my quick weekend trip home to fix Dad’s problems turns into a stay of a few weeks. Luckily, I’ve got Danny, the neighbor boy I had a crush on when I was a dorky, braces-wearing, nose-buried-in-a-book teenager, and a brand-spanking new blog to keep my mind off things. Before I know it, I’m writing product reviews of vibrators and getting questioned by a store rent-a-cop at the world’s worst date ever. All while trying to figure out how to take things with Danny to the next level. Not to complicate things or anything but my boss decides to give me an ultimatum – come back in four weeks or don’t come back at all. How in the world did my life get so complicated?
About The Author
I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Woman. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.
