Molly’s New Year’s Resolutions

I’m usually too busy working and traveling for work to have the energy or time to make New Year’sresolutions. Besides, my life is pretty fantastic – or at least that’s what I thought. I have an awesome job as an executive assistant to a millionaire who also happens to be one of my best friends. I make good – really good – money, travel the world, and no two days at work are the same. I’ve been married for over five years and our relationship is solid. But it turns out my marriage wasn’t as solid as I thoughtMy husband banging his secretary in our house was a pretty big clue about that. And, okay, I’m just going to admit it, maybe I wasn’t as happy with my job as I thought I was. Not in a small way due to the fact that I’ve been suppressing my dreams of becoming a writer. So anyway, new year, new me and all that.

1.
Teach my dad some manners. This may truly be a fool’s errand, but I’ve got to give it a try. My dad has a home care nurse because of his emphysema, but the nurses only last an average of three months. Why? You ask. Because Dad is Mr. Grumpy Pants plus Mr. Prejudiced combined in a near deaf, television-addicted package. I have to admit that I’ve always just put up with his rudeness and lack of manners. It’s not like a teenager should be telling her dad how to behave. But now I’m done. I’m living with the man until I can get his nurse situation sorted (there were some unexpected problems) and I’m no longer a teenager dependent upon my father. He’s in for the surprise of a lifetime when I start to teach him how things don’t happen without asking or using the magic word. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to tell him what the magic word is or see how long it takes him to figure it out.
2.
Have a better relationship with my mom. At this point, it would be nearly impossible to have a worse relationship with Mom. I hardly see her – often not even bothering to stop by when I’m home to find Dad yet another nurse. Since I’m home this time for a bit longer, I thought I’d stop by and see her. Not surprisingly, the visit did not go well – at all. I’m totally done with this. She has nothing good to say to me. She’s needs to stop being Debby Downer and start thinking about how to have a relationship with a grown daughter.
3.
Don’t drink and social media. In the old days, the saying was don’t drink and dial. I’ve never had that problem, though. Mostly because I can never seem to find my phone when I’ve been hitting the Cosmopolitans a bit hard. But it turns out that I’m a little bit obsessed with social media, mostly Facebook, now that I actually have the time to scroll through my news feed. I may or may not be prone to writing Facebook posts about the neighbor who I’m totally crushing on when I’m two drinks past tipsy. I’m getting a bit tired of waking up to read a Facebook post that I wish I had never thought, let alone posted. Maybe I should just delete the Facebook app from my phone?

That’s it. I was originally going to go with the traditional 10 resolutions, but I’m starting small. Having better relationships with my divorced and somewhat bitter parents should probably be a ten-year plan. I always was a bit over ambitious.

Synopsis

I’m having the suckiest day ever. First, my father, aka Mr. Grumpy Pants, calls to say his nurse just walked out on him. Likely story. I rush home to pack only to walk in on my husband getting it on with his younger, skanky secretary. Unfortunately, my quick weekend trip home to fix Dad’s problems turns into a stay of a few weeks. Luckily, I’ve got Danny, the neighbor boy I had a crush on when I was a dorky, braces-wearing, nose-buried-in-a-book teenager, and a brand-spanking new blog to keep my mind off things. Before I know it, I’m writing product reviews of vibrators and getting questioned by a store rent-a-cop at the world’s worst date ever. All while trying to figure out how to take things with Danny to the next level. Not to complicate things or anything but my boss decides to give me an ultimatum – come back in four weeks or don’t come back at all. How in the world did my life get so complicated?

D.E. HAGGERTYAbout The Author

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Woman. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.
