In Dorothy St. James’s third delectable Southern Chocolate Shop mystery, a new batch of chocolate and troubles of the heart cause a string of disasters for the Chocolate Box’s new owner, Charity Penn.

The vintage seaside town of Camellia Beach, South Carolina seems like the perfect place for romance with its quiet beach and its decadent chocolate shop that serves the world’s richest dark chocolates. The Chocolate Box’s owner, Charity Penn, falls even further under the island’s moonlit spell as she joins Althea Bays and the rest of the turtle watch team to witness a new generation of baby sea turtles hatch and make their way into the wide ocean.

Before the babies arrive, gunshots ring out in the night. Cassidy Jones, the local Casanova, is found dead in the sand with his lover Jody Dalton—the same woman who has vowed to destroy the Chocolate Box—holding the gun. It’s an obvious crime of passion, or so everyone believes. But when Jody’s young son pleads with Penn to bring his mother back to him, she can’t say no. She dives headfirst into a chocolate swirl of truth and lies, and must pick through an assortment of likely (and sometimes unsavory) suspects before it’s too late for Penn and for those she loves in Dorothy St. James’s third rich installment of the Southern Chocolate Shop mysteries, In Cold Chocolate.

About the Author

Mystery author Dorothy St. James was raised in South Carolina. She makes her home on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, a neurotic dog, and a fluffy cat. Though writing has always been a passion for her, she pursued an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology and a graduate degree in Public Administration and Urban Planning. She put her educational experience to use, having worked in all branches and all levels of government including local, regional, state, and federal. She even spent time during college working for a non-profit environmental watchdog organization.

Switching from government service and community planning to fiction writing wasn't as big of a change as some might think. Her government work was all about the stories of the people and the places where they live. As an urban planner, Dorothy loved telling the stories of the people she met. And from that, her desire to tell the tales that were so alive in her heart grew until she could not ignore it any longer. In 2001, she took a leap of faith and pursued her dream of writing fiction full-time.

* Dorothy St. James is the alter-ego of award-winning multi-published author, Dorothy McFalls. She enjoys writing in several different genres. Her works have been nominated for many awards including Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award, Reviewers International Organization Award, National Reader's Choice Award, CataRomance Reviewers' Choice Award, and The Romance Reviews Today Perfect 10! Award. Reviewers have called her work: "amazing", "perfect", "filled with emotion", and "lined with danger."

Review: IN COLD CHOCOLATE by Dorothy St. James

Author Dorothy St. James really tugs the heartstrings of readers in this very special South Carolina Lowcountry cozy mystery. Charity Penn's Chocolate Box shop is extraordinarily popular, and she's settled in well in the paradisical Camellia Island--or so she believes. But the heirs of the former owner are determined to snatch the property to sell to a high-dollar resort developer. Penn thinks she holds the high ground, until she discovers betrayal.

I so enjoyed learning the ongoing revelations of Penn's backstory, and empathizing as her efforts seem blocked at every turn, and despite her moral integrity, she just can't seem to win. This is the third in A Southern Chocolate Shop Mystery Series, and I'm very eager to read more.

Twenty million dollars’ worth of missing gems bring Carrie Singleton’s long-lost and larcenous dad back into her life and it’s up to Carrie to clear his name.

A devoted dad is as precious as diamonds, but Carrie Singleton wouldn’t know since her dad Jim’s been on the lam most of her life. In an unusual family reunion, she finds Jim breaking into her cottage in the middle of the night. The fun really starts when he begs her to help him recover his half of a twenty-million-dollar gem heist he pulled off with the local jeweler, Benton Parr. When she refuses, Jim takes off again.

Carrie finds her father again behind bars for the recent murder of Benton Parr. Who made the connection? Unbeknownst to her, Carrie’s boyfriend Dylan, an insurance investigator, has been searching for the gems. Determined to find the jewels herself, she starts examining every facet of Parr’s life. She turns up a treasure trove of suspects, one of whom bashes her on the head as she’s searching the victim’s country cabin.

Retreating to the quiet confines of the library where she works, Carrie watches as Smokey Joe, the resident cat, paws at a hole in the wall. Is he after the library’s ghost Evelyn, or something shinier?

Review: READ AND GONE by Allison Brook
(The Haunted Library Mysteries #2)

READ AND GONE is the second entry in a new series, The Haunted Library Mysteries. Enterprisingly plotted, the mystery certainly had me guessing throughout. There's a couple of really wonderful older characters: one is a former library aide who lovingly haunts the expansive Clover Ridge Library, who is/was about 60 (she's a delightful ghost) and the other is a ninety-year-old man, her former neighbor, just as sweet as can be.

However, a few of the other characters really got on my bad side, and unfortunately, their roles are pretty prominent. Granted my reaction is probably a matter of personal viewpoint, but I thought that protagonist Carrie could have developed more spine and eased off on the doormat tendencies.

READ AND GONE was definitely a mystery I couldn't puzzle out ahead of time. With several possible suspects, and a number of characters with unpleasant personalities and behavior, I couldn't latch on to just one to identify the culprit.

Review: FATAL FLIP by M. E. Bakos

A fast-paced, intriguing yet character-endearing, cozy mystery, with a delightful frisson of clever humour and realistic ups and downs, FATAL FLIP is a Home Renovation Mystery. Our kindhearted yet feisty and self-respecting first-person protagonist has taken up "flipping" homes after losing out on her employment at a mega-hospital [Read, greed and ineffectual administration]. Katelyn "follows her bliss" into residence rehab and loves it--but meanwhile, she's got to endure the downtime waiting for that first rehabbed house to sell, and to feed herself and her beloved tuxedo cat Boots. Surely house sales would be speedier, if corpses stopped turning up, stashed inside abandoned or foreclosed homes.

(A Library Lover's Mystery #9)

What a great cozy mystery, with some surprising and truly unexpected plot twists! The endearing (and in several instances ongoing) cast of characters readily elicited my attention and empathy. What reader doesn't love reading, books, and libraries? Lindsey is the Librarian of the delectable Briar Creek, Connecticut, library, and a dedicated amateur sleuth. Not much crime ever occurs in this tiny seaside community on Long Island Sound, but when it does Police Chief Emma Plewicki and Librarian Lindsey will track it down.

For fans of Betty Hechtman and Maggie Sefton, the latest craft frenzy is Holly Quinn’s Handcrafted series debut.

Sammy Kane just moved back to her hometown to run a craft store. But when the owner of a nearby yarn shop is murdered, Sammy will needle little help finding the killer.

When a heartbroken Samantha “Sammy” Kane returns to her hometown of Heartsford, WI, for her best friend Kate’s funeral, she learns that Kate’s much-loved craft store is in danger of perishing with its owner. Confounding all her expectations of the life she would live, Sammy moves back home with her golden retriever and takes over Community Craft. A few doors down Main Street, fellow new arrival Ingrid Wilson has just opened the Yarn Barn, a real “purl” of a shop. But when Sammy strolls over to see if Ingrid could use a little help, she finds Ingrid’s dead body—with a green aluminum knitting needle lodged in her throat.

Detective Liam Nash is thrown for a loop as every single citizen of Heartsford seems to have a theory about Ingrid’s murder. And nearly everyone in town seems to be a suspect. But the last time Sammy did any sleuthing was as a little moppet. And this is not fun and games. Sammy is eager to help the handsome Liam—who seems to be endlessly inventive in finding reasons to talk with her—and when Liam arrests affable woodworker Miles Danbury, Sammy puts everything on the line to help clear Miles.

As the case comes dangerously close to unraveling, Sammy must stitch the clues together. But the killer has other plans—and if Sammy’s not careful, she may wind up in a perilous knot in A Crafter Knits a Clue, the first warm and woolly yarn of Holly Quinn’s new Handcrafted mysteries.

“Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Nine Worlds” is the second book in the best-selling Barnabas Tew series, and it launches September 4! The author, Columbkill Noonan, stops by today to talk about the book and, um, groundhogs?

There is a groundhog who lives under our back deck. She’s lived there for years, and just waddles around doing groundhog-type things. Over the years she’s gotten rather, well, round (probably because I do quite a bit of gardening, and so there is always plenty of green things to eat. And flower-things. Boy, does she love to eat my pansies!)

Anyway, it didn’t really make much of an impact on us when, earlier this year, she got a bit rounder. We didn’t pay it much mind at all. But then suddenly, one day, there was no longer just our one happy, round, pansy-eating groundhog waddling around the back yard.

No, now there were six of them….five round little babies and one tired mama trying to keep up with them all. So, of course, everyone in the house spent quite a lot of time watching everyone outside of the house. Me, my husband, and our three cats watched from the window as the five little marauders ran pell-mell all over the yard, rolling around, running this way and that, and sticking their noses into anything and everything. We watched as they discovered the herb pots, and one little monster sat there, hind legs out in front of him, and happily devoured every last bit of dill I had planted the day before. We watched as two of them had a play fight and rolled, obliviously, right over my fledgling tomato plants, snapping them off at the stem. We watched as they gleefully ate up the organic greens I bought at the grocery to distract them from my kale, and then watched as they ate up all the kale, too.

If one fuzzy little guy went one way, the others went the other. All day long. It was chaos, and it was hilarious.

But the funniest part of it was poor Mama Groundhog’s reaction. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that she was exactly like Barnabas (the eponymous character in the “Barnabas Tew” series), and that all that chaos was precisely what Barnabas went through in the books.

Mama Groundhog, you see, had a routine. And she really liked that routine. Go out, eat some greens, get a little sun, go back under the deck. She’d done it for years. And now she was stuck chasing little lunatics all over the yard, making sure they didn’t get into too much trouble. If you had seen the look on her face…well, it looked very disapproving, just like Barnabas’ face does when he’s confronted with a particularly unruly character.

Just like Mama Groundhog, Barnabas is put in a situation way out of his comfort zone, when all he really wants is his nice, orderly routine. He’s whisked out of Victorian London and forced to contend with first the mythological gods and goddesses of the Ancient Egyptians (in “The Case of the Missing Scarab”) and then those of Norse mythology (in “The Case of the Nine Worlds”). But he rises to the occasion as best he can. He deals with all the chaos that comes his way…but I’m pretty certain he makes the same face that Mama Groundhog does.

As did our poor, beleaguered groundhog. All of her babies grew up, got nice and round themselves, and waddled off to make their own homes. All is well, and now she can go back to her comfortable routine, with no craziness to contend with. Will Barnabas be so lucky? I think not, at least not for awhile…I have big plans for him, you see!

Review: BARNABAS TEW AND THE CASE OF THE NINE WORLDS by Columbkill Noonan

You know Holmes and Watson. You know Tommy and Tuppence. You know Mr. and Mrs. North. Now meet probably the two most unlikely hero-detectives ever, who give new meaning to The Fool card in Tarot. Barnabas Tew and Wilfred Colby are the Laurel and Hardy of World-Saving and Apocalypse-Averting. In their first book they were killed by a mummy at the behest of Anubis so that they could enter the Egyptian land of the dead. Now they come to Asgard because Ragnarok is nigh. Of course, the two are in total ignorance of Norse mythology (and just want to return to London, if they even can), but before very long their education will improve.

I admire the subtle humour Barnabas and Wilfred engender, against the backdrop of the solemn and serious Norse gods and deceased Vikings of Valhalla. My education in these topics increased also. I wonder into what mythology these feckless heroes will travel next?

It's the height of campaign season, and instead of relishing newlywed bliss with her husband Doug Hollingsworth, Capitol Hill staffer Kit Marshall is busy with a tough reelection fight for her boss, member of Congress Maeve Dixon. Before Maeve and her staff--Kit included--leave Washington, D.C. to campaign full time in North Carolina, they have one last fundraising engagement.

On the iconic rooftop of a restaurant overlooking the Capitol and the Washington monument, Kit and her best pal Meg do their best to woo wealthy lobbyists for sizable campaign donations. Everyone's enjoying the evening soiree until a powerful K Street tycoon mysteriously tumbles off the rooftop. Even with claims the fall must be suicide, Detective Maggie Glass and Kit aren't so easily convinced foul play isn't at work. While balancing Doug's mid-life career crisis, Kit must spring into action to discover who killed the notorious Van Parker before Dixon's candidacy sputters, even if it means investigating Meg's handsome new beau, the victim's conniving widow, and a bicycle advocate hell-bent on settling a long-standing grudge. When threatening note is left on Kit's car, warning her to back off the investigation, she knows she's closing in on the true story of what happened.

Review: K STREET KILLING by Colleen Shogan

Reading this enearing series is an education in DC culture. Yes, Virginia, the District of Columbia is "a whole 'nother thing." Fortunately, amidst all the greed, cupidity, egotism, and nonsense, there are some good folks, chief among them our protagonist, Kit Mitchell, her best friend Meg, and Kit' s new hubby, Doug. Kit and Meg are unstoppable amateur sleuths who refuse to be turned aside in their pursuit of justice. When a famous hard-driving lobbyist falls to his death at a fundraiser for Kit and Meg's Congresswoman boss, and Meg becomes a person of interest, sleuthing is essential.

The Cold War gets cozy in this retro-cozy spy caper set in 1967, a year of music, miniskirts—and murder! Actress Noelle McNabb works at the Country Christmas Family Fun Park in Yuletide, Indiana, but she longs for the bright lights of Hollywood.

Real-life drama comes her way when a stranger with a fatal gunshot wound stumbles across her doorstep. When she attempts to finds the man’s murderer, Noelle encounters a super-secret spy agency, SIAMESE (Special Intelligence Apparatus for Midwest Enemy Surveillance and Espionage). SIAMESE recruits Noelle on a quest to find missing microdots under the guidance of a street-wise agent, Destiny King. As Noelle goes undercover in a cheesy nightclub and faces the enemy in late-night chases, she uncovers family secrets and finds her moral values put to the test. Along with her pet cat, Ceebee, and the kooky residents of Yuletide, Noelle discovers it takes a village to catch a killer.

Review: FLOWER POWER FATALITY by Sally Carpenter
(The Psychedelic Spy Mysteries Book 1)

An essential aspect of historical fiction is fact. The author must research to ensure that the story's background is factually accurate. FLOWER POWER FATALITY is very true to the facts, and the spirit, of the 1960's, in this case, in a quiet, out-of-the-way Midwest community. In the town of Yuletide, Christmas is the driving force, with a tourist-attracting theme park, and businesses designed to reflect Winter and Christmas, and streets and roads appropriately named. Church attendance is a main theme for the community also. Yuletide is "stuck" in the 1940's-1950's, except for a few residents like Noelle, aspiring actress who plays the Wicked Witch at the Country Christmas Family Fun Park and dreams of stardom in Hollywood, and wears miniskirts to church. Noelle is an individual with a lot of heart and integrity, and when a dying young man falls at her door, she won't stop till she uncovers the cause and the killer.
