Essential oils distributor Dorcas Wiley is the boss everyone loves to hate. So when she turns up dead, killed by her own trophy, disgruntled saleswoman Cathy Broderick is the obvious suspect in her murder. Despite opportunity, motive and incriminating evidence, Cathy declares her innocence and enlists her mah jongg pals—Sydney Bonner and her cronies Marianne, Micki and Kat—to help save her from the death penalty.

Hot off a recent and nearly deadly investigation, the women are cautious about putting themselves in peril again. Syd’s spouse isn’t thrilled about another mystery in their lives, either, but he can’t resist the plea of Cathy’s husband. Soon, Syd is leading the way as they tangle with grumpy salespeople, the victim’s estranged husband and boyfriend, a mysterious housekeeper, a litigious customer, an annoyed sheriff and Cathy’s own arrogant lawyer.

The women have their own issues to deal with in their central Florida town of Serendipity Springs. Kat faces a health challenge, Micki fields a mysterious inquiry from her ex, Marianne has a chaotic anniversary and Syd wrestles with her husband over who’s really in charge. But nothing puts everyday life into perspective like the moment when their investigation brings them face to face with danger.

About the Author

Barbara Barrett started reading mysteries when she was pregnant with her first child to keep her mind off things like her changing body and food cravings. When she’d devoured as many Agatha Christies as she could find, she branched out to English village cozies and Ellery Queen.

Later, to avoid a midlife crisis, she began writing fiction at night when she wasn’t at her day job as a human resources analyst for Iowa State Government. After releasing eleven full-length romance novels and one novella, she returned to the cozy mystery genre, using one of her retirement pastimes, the game of mah jongg, as her inspiration. Not only has it been a great social outlet, it has also helped keep her mind active when not writing.

Bamboozled, the second book in her “Mah Jongg Mystery” series, features four friends who play mah jongg together and share otherwise in each other’s lives. None of the four is based on an actual person. Each is an amalgamation of several mah jongg friends with a lot of Barbara’s imagination thrown in for good measure. The four will continue to appear in future books in the series.

Anticipating the day when she would write her first mystery, she has been a member of the Mystery/Romantic Suspense chapter of Romance Writers of America for over a decade. She credits them with helping her hone her craft.

Barbara is married to the man she met her senior year of college. They have two grown children and eight grandchildren.

Review: MURDER MADE TO ORDER by Lena Gregory
(ALL-DAY BREAKFAST CAFE #2)

A heartwarming cozy mystery set in a tiny Florida community, at its heart MURDER MADE TO ORDER is as much about "finding home" as it is about murder and mystery. Gia Morelli, a New York City native, lost her mother early and was discarded by her father the day of her graduation. Befriending a Florida transplant, Savannah Mills, an aspiring dancer, Gia lucks into a lifelong supportive friendship. Escaping a disastrous ugly marriage, Gia moves to Boggy Creek, Florida, Savannah' s home community. Opening a diner, she absorbs herself into the community, but an attempt by the city council to close her diner (supposedly a violation of zoning restrictions) forces Gia to consider the nature of Home. Is it NYC, her birthplace? Or is it her adopted community, Boggy Creek, among friends and a possible romantic venture, with her beloved dog Thor?

Cozy Mystery

Henery Press (June 19, 2018)
Print Length: 210 pages
Digital ASIN: B07BMJM89K

Visiting a psychic is outside the norm for Ellison Russell. Finding bodies is not. Unfortunately, the psychic’s crystal ball says she’ll soon be surrounded by death. Again.

Drat.

Now there’s a corpse in the front drive, a witchy neighbor ready to turn Ellison and her (not so) little dog into toadstools, and a stripper named Starry Knight occupying the guest room.

How did 1975 go so wrong so quickly?

Ellison must handle Mother (who’s found a body of her own), make up with a certain handsome detective, and catch a killer, or the death surrounding her might be her own.

About the Author

– Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders. She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean–and she’s got an active imagination. Truth is–she’s an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.

 SHADOW DANCING EXCERPT

“Ellison!” Mother’s voice was a mix of relief and exasperation.
“Where have you been?”
Tell Mother I’d visited a medium? I’d rather hammer shims under my fingernails or wander around outside without my coat.
“Out.”

“I need you.”

Time stopped. Mother never needed me.

“What’s wrong?”

“I need you.”

Apparently that was the only explanation I was getting.

“Can you come over? Please?”

Please? What had happened?

“Of course, I’ll come. Are you okay?”

“Hurry.”

She hung up.

Aggie appeared in the doorway, a steaming mug of all-things-good in her hand.

“Would you please put that in a travel mug?” I asked.

“Of course. Problem?”

“She won’t tell me what’s wrong.”

Mother was not given to crying wolf. Whatever the issue was, it was big. A trickle of dread chilled my blood.

“The ambiance committee is meeting here at three. I’ll be back before then.”

“I’ll have everything ready.” Aggie was indispensable. How we’d ever gotten along without her was a mystery. With her sproingy red hair, vivid kaftans, and outspoken ways, Aggie was not Mother’s idea of a perfect housekeeper. Mother’s opinion didn’t matter. I thought Aggie was the best thing since sliced bread.

A moment later I was back in the car, snug in a fox jacket with matching hat. I settled the plastic travel mug filled with coffee between my thighs and wished I hadn’t. The plastic was hot. I turned the key and ELO’s “Can’t Get It Out of My Head” nearly deafened me. I sympathized. Even with hitting a pedestrian and Mother’s crisis, there was a man I couldn’t get out of my head. I turned off the radio and motored down the drive.

Mother’s door opened as soon as I pulled up in front of her house.

I took a quick gulp of coffee then hurried up the front walk. “What’s wrong?”

Mother looked from left to right as if her neighbors were hanging around in the cold, waiting to eavesdrop. “Come in.”

With the door safely closed behind me, Mother sighed.

“What? What’s happened?”

The color had leeched from her skin and the perfect helmet of her hair was mussed. “I found a body.”

Mother? A body? It was about time someone in this family besides me found a body.

Review: SHADOW DANCING by Julie Mulhern
(Country Club Mystery)

Although almost all the characters in this series are "a cut above," actually several socioeconomic levels above me, the author's wry humour, use of irony, and judicious eliciting of empathy, make the series endearing, despite the cultural disparity. The twisted convolutions of the mystery provided, and protagonist Ellison's "flair" (or fate) for stumbling over corpses, keep the reader in suspense, and Ellison' s rocky "relationship" with Detective Anarchy Jones warms our hearts, as does her protective love for her sixteen-year-old daughter Grace.

Ellison and Grace are drawn into a morass of crime, including underage prostitution and strip clubs, venues Ellison is fiercely determined to keep far, far away from Grace. But murder has a way of striking much too close to home.

Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Crooked Lane Books (June 12, 2018)
Hardcover: 250 Pages
ISBN-13: 978-1683315803

Halloween in North Carolina’s Outer Banks becomes seriously tricky when librarian Lucy Richardson stumbles across something extra unusual in the rare books section: a dead body.

Wealthy businessman Jay Ruddle is considering donating his extensive collection of North Carolina historical documents to the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, but the competition for the collection is fierce. Unfortunately, while the library is hosting a lecture on ghostly legends, Jay becomes one of the dearly departed in the rare books section. Now, it’s up to Lucy Richardson and her fellow librarians to bone up on their detective skills and discover who is responsible for this wicked Halloween homicide.

Meanwhile, very strange things are happening at the library―haunted horses are materializing in the marsh, the lights seem to have an eerie life of their own, and the tiny crew of a model ship appears to move around when no one is watching. Is Lucy at her wit’s end? Or can it be that the Bodie Island Lighthouse really is haunted?

With The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on everyone’s minds and ghoulish gossip on everyone’s lips, Lucy will need to separate the clues from the boos if she wants to crack this case without losing her head in The Spook in the Stacks, the delightful fourth in national bestseller Eva Gates’ Lighthouse Library mysteries.

Review: THE SPOOK IN THE STACKS by Eva Gates
(LIGHTHOUSE LIBRARY MYSTERY #4)

I admire lighthouses, and I adore libraries, so the combination of these is a delight. Lucy, our protagonist, is a librarian at the lovely Bodie Island Lighthouse Library at Nag' s Head, North Carolina, in the Outer Banks, following some years at the Harvard Libraries. Near Halloween, a wealthy expatriate determines to gift his extensive collection of nautical North Carolina historical records and documents, and seems to have designated the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library as his recipient--but during a lecture presentation, he is murdered in the Library's rare book department. Lucy and her colleagues are dedicated to finding the truth and winning the collection for their Library, as the owner had wished.

Lots of spooky happenings plus some emotional crises and uproars interweave with history to provide page-turning intrigue.
