A sprightly and heartwarming cozy mystery with a suspenseful plot plus romance (then and now), FINAL EXAM is Book #8 in the Witch City Mystery Series (the reference, of course, is to Salem, Massachusetts, the setting of this delightfully engaging series). Lee (Maralee) Barrett lost her folks at a young age but thankfully was raised by her Aunt Ibby (Isobel), long-time town Librarian, with whom Lee still lives, in an upstairs apartment her aunt had renovated for Lee's use. As a fairly new on-camera field reporter at WICH-TV, the local station, Lee is frequently out and about with cameraperson Francine, but they could not have expected the consequences when they follow an anonymous tip to an abandoned quarry outside of town. The tipster claimed a car was submerged in the quarry, and that proved out; but there is far more to that situation than anybody expected. The discovery inspires grief, mystery, and fear, because what happened stayed concealed for forty-five years, and the individual responsible might well be living among the townspeople of Salem still. Now a portion of the truth is revealed; what will happen next?

Author Carol Perry keeps her readers glued to the page with excitement, intrigue, suspense, and yes, romance. FINAL EXAM is a cozy mystery I couldn't stop reading.

Death By A Whisker (Cat Rescue Mystery, #2)Death By A Whisker by T.C. LoTempio
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

DEATH BY A WHISKER is an absolutely riveting cozy mystery set in Deer Park, North Carolina. There's a fine large cast of characters, plenty of animals, lots of tension and suspense and budding romance, anger, infidelity, success and failure; all the realistic and intriguing human motives. I couldn't stop reading and I surely didn't want it to end. The author definitely a twisty plot, a fatality that might or might not be homicide, or accident, or natural causes; and I could not figure out the culprit ahead of time, so I was continually on the "edge of my seat" trying to solve the puzzle, just as did our protagonist, Sydney, who is publicity director of the Friendly Paws Shelter operated by her sister Kat. I really became quickly absorbed and was sorry to reach the end!

Frank Marr was a good cop, until his burgeoning addictions to alcohol and cocaine forced him into retirement from the D.C. Metro police. Now, he's barely eking out a living as a private investigator for a defense attorney--also Frank's ex-girlfriend.

Ostracized by his family after a botched case that led to the death of his baby cousin, Jeffrey, Frank was on a collision course with rock bottom. Now clean and clinging hard to sobriety, Frank passes the time--and tests himself--by robbing the houses of local dealers, taking their cash and flushing their drugs down the toilet. When an old friend from his police days needs Frank's help to prove he didn't shoot an unarmed civilian, Frank is drawn back into the world of dirty cops and suspicious drug busts, running in the same circles that enabled his addiction those years ago.

Never one to play by the rules, Frank recruits a young man he nearly executed years before. Together--a good man trying not to go bad and a bad man trying to do good--detective and criminal charge headfirst into the D.C. drug wars. Neither may make it out.

Trigger (Frank Marr, #3)Trigger by David Swinson

TRIGGER is a, full-on gritty crime noir set in Washington, D.C., starring a vigilante protagonist, ex-cocaine addict (recovering) and recovering alcoholic,.I former Metro D.C. narcotics bureau detective (how apropos). Frank Marr is now a P.I. in D.C., after being forced to resign from the Police Department and in addition losing the woman he still loves, not so much because of his addictions, but for his years of lies and covering-up. Now he spies out dealers and burgles their stashes, flushing the drugs, pocketing the money. It's still an adrenaline rush, but it's also still a temptation.

If this series had been set in Scotland instead of in D.C., I would compare it to the crime noir fiction of Stuart MacBride. That gives you the impression of what kind of full-bore noir author David Swinson delivers.

Has a curse fallen on the small town of Taylorsford, Virginia? After a young woman goes missing during a spring bonfire, library director Amy Webber must wade through the web of lies only to find a truth that she may not want to untangle.

Spring has sprung in quaint Taylorsford, Virginia, and the mayor has revived the town’s long-defunct May Day celebration to boost tourism. As part of the festivities, library director Amy Webber is helping to organize a research project and presentation by a local folklore expert. All seems well at first—but spring takes on a sudden chill when a university student inexplicably vanishes during a bonfire.

The local police cast a wide net to find the missing woman, but in a shocking turn of events, Amy’s swoon-worthy neighbor Richard Muir becomes a person of interest in the case. Not only is Richard the woman’s dance instructor, he also doesn’t have an alibi for the night the student vanished—or at least not one he’ll divulge, even to Amy.

When the missing student is finally discovered lost in the mountains, with no memory of recent events—and a dead body lying nearby—an already disturbing mystery takes on a sinister new hue. Blessed with her innate curiosity and a librarian’s gift for research, Amy may be the only one who can learn the truth in Past Due for Murder, Victoria Gilbert’s third charming Blue Ridge Library mystery.

Past Due for Murder (Blue Ridge Library Mysteries #3)Past Due for Murder by Victoria Gilbert
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blue Ridge Library Mysteries #3

Library Director Amy Webber is one determined heroine. Like fools who tread where angels fear to go, Amy perseveres even in the face of danger; and danger never scares her off. In the past year, she has faced multiple killers and much personal danger, but that never stops her. This is a heroine to admire! At the moment, her relationship with beloved neighbor Richard appears to be a little rocky, or at least he is being secretive. The composer who once badly broke her heart with his controlling ways and psychological abuse is back in the area, complete with new lady (the one in the wings when he was still seeing Amy). Richard's parents are coming to visit (oh, dear); and now a Clarion University student has gone missing in the mountains. Another professor at Clarion, a noted folklorist, is stirring up trouble about the composer and about an elderly mountain denizen of a long-established area family. Then troublemaking turns to death, and Amy is caught up in the thick of both multiple mysteries and danger.

Author Victoria Gilbert keeps readers engrossed and turning those pages in the BLUE RIDGE LIBRARY MYSTERIES.

Death by CommitteeDeath by Committee by Alexis Morgan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

DEATH BY COMMITTEE, the first in a new series (Abby McCree Mysteries), is a compelling and ultimately astonishing cozy mystery set in the Pacific Northwest. After many years in an entrepreneurial marriage in which she and her husband built their own business, our protagonist finds herself divorced and alone after discovering his infidelity and legally insuring an equitable divorce settlement. Her beloved aunt Sybil of Snowberry Creek, Washington, passes, and bequeaths Abby all her property. So as one door closes, another opens, even though it means ongoing grief for the aunt with whom she couldn't spend the desired time as a child, after her own parents' divorce.

Abby also inherits a wonderfully devoted Mastiff and a grumpy tenant, with probably PTSD and a strong vein of loyalty. Unfortunately, loyalty is not found in every citizen of Snowberry Creek; several elderly quilters are opposed to Abby simply because she is Sybil's niece. Then the lady who was Sybil's chief opponent in the Quilting Guild is discovered deceased---in Sybil's, now Abby's, backyard blackberry bramble patch. Dolly didn't put herself there; it's a clear case of homicide. Now Abby has to determine how to clear her late Aunt's reputation.

I found DEATH BY COMMITTEE an absorbing cozy, with a really unexpected denouement which had me fired up too, just as it did Abby. I'm anticipating the next in this exciting series.

Mystery bookstore owner Samantha Washington is trying to keep her grandmother from spending her golden years in an orange jumpsuit . . . The small town of North Harbor, Michigan, is just not big enough for the two of them: flamboyant phony Maria Romanov and feisty Nana Jo. The insufferable Maria claims she's descended from Russian royalty and even had a fling with King Edward VIII back in the day. She’s not just a lousy liar, she's a bad actress, so when she nabs the lead in the Shady Acres Senior Follies—a part Nana Jo plays every year in their retirement village production—Nana Jo blows a gasket and reads her the riot act in front of everyone. Of course, when Maria is silenced with a bullet to the head, Nana Jo lands the leading role on the suspects list. Sam’s been writing her newest mystery, set in England between the wars, with her intrepid heroine Lady Daphne drawn into murder and scandal in the household of Winston Churchill. But now she has to prove that Nana Jo’s been framed. With help from her grandmother's posse of rambunctious retirees, Sam shines a spotlight on Maria’s secrets, hoping to draw the real killer out of the shadow

The Novel Art of Murder (Mystery Bookshop, #3)The Novel Art of Murder by V.M. Burns
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First of all, this cover is adorable! I love how the artist personalized the two poodles, and made them very different in character. Wonderfully illustrated! Second, it's wonderful to read how strongly these ladies are connected. Samantha Winston, bookstore owner and widow; her grandmother Nano Jo; and the friends of Nana Jo's who all live at the retirement complex; plus Nana Jo's retired police officer boyfriend and Sam's new boyfriend with the mysterious past (possibly covert government agency), are all "fun" characters, whom the author draws very realistically. All are strongly united friends, mostly unselfish, devoted to each other. The book is so encouraging in that way, as is the group's diligence at ferreting out a murderer, and the contrast with the admittedly bumbling police detective, "Stinky" Pitt. I highly recommend this series.
