While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

On Winning a Lottery
We don’t hear too many happily-ever-after stories about lottery winners. Often, they are portrayed as impulsive people who manage to squander all their money within years (sometimes months) of winning the jackpot. And then there are the horror stories about long-lost friends and relatives who appear out of nowhere, asking for handouts. It is not too surprising when lottery winners decide to take physical and emotional distance from their previous lives.

Gilda Greco, the protagonist of A Season for Killing Blondes, Too Many Women in the Room, and A Different Kind of Reunion, took a more measured approach after winning $19 million in Lotto 649.

Here’s her story and advice for future lottery winners:

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the six numbers on the radio. I waited until the following morning to call the Lottery Commission. Without revealing my identity, I asked them to repeat the numbers three times. While I could hear chuckling in the background, the receptionist maintained her cool, crisp voice. Convinced that I had truly won, I decided to wait one week before driving to Toronto to pick up my check.

At the time, I was teaching mathematics at a high school in Guelph, Ontario. We were in the middle of exams and a week before the end of the semester. I scrambled to get everything done and turned in my report cards one day ahead of schedule. I toyed with the idea of renting a limousine—one of my former students owned a fleet of them—but, in the end, I drove myself to Toronto and picked up the check.

I was totally unprepared for the publicity and had to rush home and phone everyone before the evening news. Had I to do it over, I would have shared the news with my mother and two close friends. I would have also have given my principal the heads-up regarding second semester. I still cringe at the four-day notice I gave before waltzing away from a twenty-five-year teaching career. Thankfully, a qualified replacement was available.

I decided to stick with my financial advisor, who provided a wealth of information and advice. My head spun with all the possibilities and challenges that lay ahead. I had already made one major decision regarding my career, but I wasn’t ready to make any other commitments. So, after two weeks of meeting with several other financial professionals, among them a tax planner and an accountant, I booked a flight to Hawaii and spent the rest of the winter there.

When I returned in early April, I was rested and ready to plan my future. I established my investment and philanthropic goals and decided who would receive money gifts. I sold my condo, donated all the furnishings, and relocated to my hometown of Sudbury, Ontario. While I could live almost anywhere, I decided to live in the same city as my widowed mother and closest friends.

I spent the next eighteen months visiting almost every place on my bucket list. My most memorable trip: an Antarctica 12-day cruise. I still have vivid memories of the amazing wildlife, especially the penguins.

To my surprise, I started to feel restless. I needed a new direction and decided to enroll in the Career Development Practitioner Program at Conestoga College. It took me two years to complete the online courses and practicum. Afterward, I opened ReCareering, a career counseling office that catered to boomers.

Six years have passed since winning the lottery. While most of my experiences have been positive ones, I have also become embroiled in three murder investigations. You can find out more by reading the novels in the Gilda Greco Mystery Series.

Advice for lottery winners...

Keep your ticket stored in a safe place until you are ready to pick up the check.

Surround yourself with financial professionals who have been highly recommended, and don’t be afraid to get a second opinion.

Prepare yourself for the pitfalls of publicity. All sorts of people will suddenly appear, hoping to benefit from your windfall. Set boundaries.

Investigate security options for yourself and your family. This is a necessary expense!

Review: A DIFFERENT KIND OF REUNION

Here's a "different kind" of cozy mystery. With a lot of suspense and tension, a lot of memory strolls, and the addition of an intriguing paranormal element, this mystery stands out. Our protagonist, Gilda, strongly but not too fondly remembers her seven months of teaching eight grade in Parry Sound, Ontario, a closely knit and sports-oriented community. Called back after the inexplicable demise of a student she taught two decades earlier, Gilda finds herself attending a seance, stumbling down Memory Lane, and puzzling out her former student's death.

About the Author

Tricia L. Sanders writes cozy mysteries and women’s fiction. She adds a dash of romance and a sprinkling of snark to raise the stakes. Her heroines are humorous women embarking on journeys of self-discovery all the while doing so with class, sass, and a touch of kickass. Tricia is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, so don't get between her and the television when a game is on. Currently, she is working on a mystery series set in the fictional town of Wickford, Missouri. Another project in the works is a women's fiction road trip adventure. Review of DEATH, DIAMONDS, AND FREEZER BURN

by Tricia L. Sanders

An utterly delightful and homey cozy mystery set in Missouri, this is the second in the Grime Pays Series. Poor CeeCee Cavanaugh is still reeling but trying to overcome following her discovery of her cheating spouse and his cleaning out of their finances. Phillip is still intermittently hanging around, probably to avoid paying spousal support while the divorce is in process; and CeeCee's Dragon Lady mother-in-law (she calls her Witch Hazel, with good reason) is still disparaging CeeCee at every opportunity, real or perceived. Detective Case Alder, as well as being a talented investigator, has his eye on CeeCee, as does her boss Grant Hunter, a developer. But CeeCee at forty-eight is determined to “make it on her own” as an independent individual, and to grow her new cleaning business. Yes, she got her start cleaning up a crime scene (and was abducted and nearly became a fatality in the process), but she's skilled at it (and it drives her mother-in-law batty); so she's not giving in to dependence on any man. What she is also skilled at is amateur investigation, and is there plenty of need for it in this novel!

Tour_MARDI GRAS MURDER by Ellen Byron

About the Book

Mardi Gras Murder: A Cajun Country Mystery

Cozy Mystery

4th in Series

Crooked Lane Books (October 9, 2018)

Hardcover: 304 pages

ISBN-10: 168331705X

ISBN-13: 978-1683317050

Digital ASIN: B078LZ5W3H

Southern charm meets the dark mystery of the bayou as a hundred-year flood, a malicious murder, and a most unusual Mardi Gras converge at the Crozat Plantation B&B.

It’s Mardi Gras season on the bayou, which means parades, pageantry, and gumbo galore. But when a flood upends life in the tiny town of Pelican, Louisiana—and deposits a body of a stranger behind the Crozat Plantation B&B—the celebration takes a decidedly dark turn. The citizens of Pelican are ready to Laissez les bon temps rouler—but there’s beaucoup bad blood on hand this Mardi Gras.

Maggie Crozat is determined to give the stranger a name and find out why he was murdered. The post-flood recovery has delayed the opening of a controversial exhibit about the little-known Louisiana Orphan Train. And when a judge for the Miss Pelican Mardi Gras Gumbo Queen pageant is shot, Maggie’s convinced the murder is connected to the body on the bayou. Does someone covet the pageant queen crown enough to kill for it? Could the deaths be related to the Orphan Train, which delivered its last charges to Louisiana in 1929? The leads are thin on this Fat Tuesday—and until the killer is unmasked, no one in Pelican is safe.

A simmering gumbo of a humorous whodunit, Mardi Gras Murder is the fourth piquant installment in USA Today bestselling author Ellen Byron’s award-winning Cajun Country mysteries.

A Guest Post with Grand-mère , aka Charlotte Crozat

Bonjour, hello there! I’m Magnolia Marie Crozat’s grandmother. You all probably know her as Maggie. That darling girl is the absolute light of my life. I felt terrible when her boyfriend in New York choose to marry someone else, but I was also secretly happy because that brought her back home to us. I know the transition from one of the world’s most sophisticated cities to our little village hasn’t been easy on her, but she’s made strides in pursuing her art career, and we’re all so fond of her new boyfriend, Detective Bo Durand.

Let me tell you a little about Crozat Plantation B&B. It’s been in my late husband’s family since it was built around 1830. Maintaining these big old homes is terribly expensive. After my husband passed away, my son Tug came up with a way to keep us from having to sell the place — turn it into a bed and breakfast. Tug’s always been handy, so he does a lot of the maintenance himself. His wonderful wife, Ninette, is a fantastic cook. Not only does she cook up delicious breakfasts for guests featuring local dishes like her famous Holiday Brandy Pain Perdu – “pain perdu” is the French version of French toast – visitors can enjoy her takes on famous Louisiana dishes like jambalaya and Shrimp Etouffee for dinner or lunch.

We usually boast a full house for the days up to and including Mardi Gras. We celebrate with many of the usual trappings, like a parade, a big party, and a communal gumbo that feeds masses of locals and visitors. We also anoint a local teenager as Miss Pelican Mardi Gras Gumbo Queen. We call it a pageant, although the selection process is closed to the public and determined by a panel of judges. Because of our family’s standing in the community, a Crozat has served as a judge since the pageant began. It’s been my duty for so many years now I can’t count. I encourage the panel to get past any preconceived prejudices they might have for or against contestants. Let me tell you, wrangling all of them can be exhausting. Don’t tell anyone this, but I downright dislike some of my fellow judges! They can be stuffy, opinionated, and downright obnoxious. I swear, it’s a wonder some of them haven’t killed each other.

Anyway, it’s time for me to gear up for this annual duty. Achoo! Forgive me, it must be allergies. Where was I? Oh, yes, steeling myself for reading applications and days of judgment and – achoo! There’s another sneeze. I do believe I have a cold coming on.

Oh dear, what terrible timing.

Or is it?

Review of Mardi Gras Murder by Ellen Byron (Cajun Country Mystery #4)

I really empathise with the characters in this delightfully cosy mystery and cheered (most of) them on throughout their joys and tribulations. The writing is well-done and draws the reader right on in, like a warm hospitable Louisiana welcome. When a bizarre storm overtakes tiny Pelican, Louisiana, flooding many out, the community coheses and takes care of their own as much as they possibly can while awaiting state funds for rebuilding. Whoever can takes in those temporarily homeless, and that includes the Crozats and their B&B. When they discover a corpse in the flooded area, buried beneath washed up debris, nobody seems to recognize him, and he has no idea. A tragedy of the storm; but then it turns out he was helped on his way, and it's a homicide. All this right at the beginning of Pelican's Mardi Gras, and the beauty pageant, and the famous gumbo cook-off... Readers will be caught right up and eager to solve the mysteries as B&B owner Maggie Crozat sleuths on.

Abigail Keam is an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author who writes the Josiah Reynolds Mystery series about a Southern beekeeper turned amateur female sleuth in the Bluegrass.

DEATH BY DROWNING won the 2011 Gold Medal Award for Best Mystery Sleuth from Reader’s Favorite and also was placed on the USA BOOK NEWS-Best Books List of 2011 as a Finalist.

While Miss Gail’s novels are for enjoyment, she discusses the importance of a local sustainable food economy and land management for honeybees and other creatures.

She currently lives on the Kentucky River in a metal house with her husband and various critters. She still has honeybees.

Review of DEATH BY DRAMA
by Abigail Keam
A Josiah Reynolds Mystery 11

Ms. Keam is one prolific author, in at least 3 genres (cozy mystery; epic fantasy; sweet romance), and simultaneously is an award-winning beekeeper. So it's not unlikely that Josiah Reynolds, the protagonist of this eponymously-titled series, also practices beekeeping. What is more unusual in a series protagonist is that Josiah is older in ill health from a fall suffered some time back that might well have instead been fatal. But she doesn't take poor health lying down; she stays active, keeping bees, bonding with friends, trying to straighten out her daughter Asa, who owns her own insurance fraud investigation company and lives in London (instead of in Kentucky, as does Josiah), and even developing a lovely (if possibly not requited yet) love interest. Also naturally, when Love Interest's brother is charged with murder, even before the death is declared unnatural, Josiah is not going to let this continue and if Asa knows what's good for her, she'll be right alongside helping sleuth.

Killer songs and a killer voice, but a killer at her gig?

Vy has always found herself at the center of attention as the lead singer for one of Miami's top cover bands, but when she finds herself at the center of a murder investigation, while performing at the Steel Horse Bar, that changes the tune of the night. Someone believes that Vy knows the truth behind the murder of the bar owner Ricky, and now that person is after her. Vy better figure out quickly who wanted Ricky dead, who is threatening her with her favorite band’s song lyrics, and why she’s falling for the handsome Detective Houston, before she too sings her last note. With a mixture of mystery, mayhem and comedy, you will find yourself immersed in Vy's musical and murderous world.

About the Author

The Last Note’s main backdrop, the amazing city of Miami, Florida, is beloved and well-known to me. I was born and raised in Miami, and like the novel’s main character Vy, I am a singer/songwriter, as well as the lead singer to a self-proclaimed cover band. All things relating to music or literature are my passion. I keep a journal, and I am constantly writing poems, stories, and any thought that comes to mind. I have a fascination for black and white films, that have the element of mystery. As I have been told by many, I have a very creative imagination.

Review of THE LAST NOTE by Zaina Alfaro
(A Miami Music Mystery)

Yes, all three combine in this novel: the City of Miami, Music, and Mystery (and Murder!) A perky and fast-paced mystery with a likable and easily empathized with heroine, THE LAST NOTE draws from the author's own personal experiences in Miami and in music to create a winning heroine who will draw attention from other characters and from readers. Meanwhile, readers glean a lot about the Miami Cuban-American experiences, about Latinas, and will warm to the protagonist turned amateur sleuth and her family, friends, and new love interest.

Review: BACK STABBERS by Julie Mulhern
(COUNTRY CLUB MURDERS #8)

When I first started reading this series a while back, I expected I would be disinterested with a class structure beyond my means and past my imagination. So wrong! (I'm so glad!) I love the series. Ellison is a precious personality; although born into wealth and married into wealth and raised by a very “upper-class disdainful” mother, she is very much an “at-home,” loving, compassionate and generous individual, an artist, and a devoted mother and dog lover.
In fact, Ellison strongly reminds me of Lois Winston's crafting sleuth Anastasia Pollack. Both are women with (or previously with) some wealth, who could be snooty and inclusive. But both are generous, kind-hearted souls, and make their series all the more appealing because of their natures.
Also, both can't seem to stop stumbling over corpses (usually NOT the “natural death” moments), and so just have to investigate for themselves—sometimes or else!
This time Ellison unfortunately stumbles on her dead broker. That was more than she needed to see and that death only uncovers an iceberg of intrigue and danger.

Anastasia Pollack’s son Alex is dating Sophie Lambert, the new kid in town. For their community service project, the high school seniors have chosen to raise money for the county food bank. Anastasia taps her craft industry contacts to donate materials for the students to make Christmas ornaments they’ll sell at the town’s annual Holiday Crafts Fair.

At the fair Anastasia meets Sophie’s father, Shane Lambert, who strikes her as a man with secrets. She also notices a woman eavesdropping on their conversation. Later that evening when the woman turns up dead, Sophie’s father is arrested for her murder.

Alex and Sophie beg Anastasia to find the real killer, but Anastasia has had her fill of dead bodies. She’s also not convinced of Shane’s innocence. Besides, she’s promised younger son Nick she’ll stop risking her life. But how can she say no to Alex?

Not only is Anastasia a “crime magnet,” she is hilarious and snarky, a delight to read about and a dedicated friend. Her mother-in-law and her companions are out of this world (or should be), her boyfriend is or is not a government operative, and her sons are actually adorable. Anastasia's crime-magnetism never quits, and in this mystery, her son's new girlfriend turns out to be someone (like her dad) with a new name, a lifetime-absent mother, and a father accused of murder. Anastasia to the rescue!

Early one gray November morning, retired Lighthouse Cove, NY police chief, Edmund DeCleryk, finds Emily Bradford's body on the beach at the base of the bluff where the local museum and historical society stands. At the same time, a break-in has been reported at the museum, and Emily's coat and purse are found hanging on a peg in the museum's gift shop where she worked. Was her death the result of a burglary gone bad or something more sinister?

When the police chief is called out of town for a family emergency, he hires Ed, now working as a criminal consultant, to assist deputy police chief, Carrie Ramos, with the murder investigation. After several leads don't pan out, the chief, now back in Lighthouse Cove, decides to close the case. Confident that with more time the murder can be solved, Ed is determined to continue investigating on his own, with encouragement from his wife, Annie the museum's executive director.

One morning while in the basement of the museum, the couple discovers a copy of a map dated 1785, and Ed's instincts tell him it may be connected to Emily's death. On a hunch, he and Annie travel to Toronto, Canada, where he learns of the original map and a manuscript written in 1847 that were unearthed during an archaeological dig. The manuscript contains information about a ship that capsized during a fierce storm on Lake Ontario -- in 1785. Now Ed has clues as to why the murder occurred, but he still doesn't know who committed the crime. Or does he?

Review of MURDER IN THE MUSEUM by Karen Shughart
(Edmund DeCleryk Mysteries #1)

MURDER IN THE MUSEUM presents a somewhat different angle on the “Amateur Sleuth,” at least in terms of mysteries I've read. Ed DeCleryk is a retired Chief of Police in Lighthouse Cove, New York, an upstate Atlantic-side community. In retirement, he has become an independent consultant to law enforcement agencies, especially in smaller municipalities without ready forensic access. His wife Annie is director of the Lighthouse Cove Historical Society and Museum. When a murder connected to the Museum occurs, Ed is tasked to assist the local detective; but even after the current Chief of Police decides to close the case, Ed doesn't, and he and Annie continue the investigation, discovering links to the past, far back in time but not so distant in motive.
MURDER IN THE MUSEUM is a compelling cozy mystery read which will keep the reader on her/his toes right along with the investigators, and provides a beautiful scenic setting with empathetic characters too.
