Review: THE CHRISTMAS WALK CAPER by J.B. Michaels

5 Cozy Stars

I was very delightfully surprised at the additional element that appeared later in the story, which really won it over for me. This is first of a series, a smooth cosy mystery starring an injured former Chicago P. D. Detective, and his new love interest, a banker, and is set in the charming community of Geneva, Illinois.

Review: ALASKAN CHRISTMAS COLD CASE by Sarah Varland

4 Stars

This excitingly intriguing Romantic Suspense weighs in both on the Romance and on Suspense. The mystery of the killer's identity, and ability to move around undetected, puzzled me throughout and definitely kept me turning pages to the end. Emotions run both high and deep, so romance lovers will really enjoy, as will puzzling mystery fans.

Review: THE WEDDING DRESS CHRISTMAS by Rachel Haupt

5 Cozy Stars!

How could anyone not enthuse over this very special story? Even me, Scrooge-ish as I am, fell in love with the town of Hearts Bend, its residents, and the legend (facts) of a significantly, supremely, special wedding gown designed and sewn in 1912, in Birmingham, AL, by a black seamstress [read between the lines]: a gown which has endured 108 years and multiple brides, each with her own special story.  This treasured story is a Novella in  Rachel Hauck's THE WEDDING COLLECTION (3.5).

Review: BEWITCH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS by N. M. Howell (Brimstone Bay Book 3)

5 Cozy Stars
Delightfully bewitching paranormal Cozy, this is Brimstone Bay Mysteries Book 3. Protagonist-narrator River, her landlady, and housemates, are all Witches (the good kind of course). River's Christmas Eve is inaugurated by a Ghost visit: a pair who can only remember one fact: River "is next." A wild puzzle chase ensues, as the witch crew uncover a number of unreasonable deaths, and then she and her boyfriend Jordan are targeted. I really enjoyed how the puzzle played out--quite creative!

Review: CHRISTMAS CALAMITY AT THE VICARAGE by Emily Organ (Churchill & Pemberley)

5 Cozy Stars!

Now this is my definition of Classic-British-Village-Cosy-Mystery! I loved it: the puzzle, secret ways, subtly snarky humor, the two protagonists who are sort of a gender reversal of Sherlock and faithful Watson--two elderly ladies, one plus-size in the Sherlock role, one skinny and dog-devoted in the Watson role. A quick and utterly adorable read!

Review: A COP AND A COOP by Hilary Avis

5 stars

Release Nov. 22 2019

First in the new CLUCKS AND CLUES COZY MYSTERY Series, A COP AND A COOP sees 56-year-old Leona Davis returning to her hometown, tiny Honeytree, Oregon, after 35 years of Beverly Hills marriage. Leona purchases an apple orchard and plans to raise chickens for egg sales. Very feisty and independent, she refuses male help and instead digs her own coop foundation, never expecting to uncover buried bones.

I love a mystery with convolutions and this Cozy definitely delivers!

Review_ MY WINTER CITY

5 Stars!

What a beautifully lyrical evocation of urban freeze, buses and pedestrians and sledding, frozen breath and icicle pendant and slowing of time! Clever illustrations and text that strums all the senses with winter's delights ensure an engaging book for elementary to middle-grade readers.

Review: THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST

5 Stars

I love my heroes feckless and my heroines feisty, and a heapin' helping of sharp-edged villain just garnishes the tale nicely. We've got all that and well done in Angie Fox's Holiday cozy mystery, THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST, Book 8.5 in THE SOUTHERN GHOST HUNTER MYSTERIES.

Downtrodden but feisty and strong-willed inadvertent Tennessee ghost hunter Verity has her work cut out for her, both "on the job"
and with ice-edged future mother-in-law Virginia, town dowager. Author Angie Fox has a flair for character for certain.

Review: CHRISTMAS IN SILVER BELLS FALLS

5 Stars

Not generally a fan of either the Romance genre or the category of "contemporary women's fiction," but even I found CHRISTMAS IN SILVER BELLS FALLS entertaining (okay, even heartwarming). In several ways I was able to resonate with the protagonist and I appreciated her character evolution.

This novel is #1 in the SILVER BELLS FALLS series, set in Upstate New York close to the Canadian border.

Review: YULETIDE HOMICIDE (WICCAN WHEEL MYSTERIES)

5 Stars!
Review: Part of the WICCAN WHEEL MYSTERIES by Jennifer David Hesse, YULETIDE HOMICIDE is both a delight to read and an eye-opener, fully grounded in both real life (the protagonist/narrator is an attorney) and in mystical spirituality (she is also a Wiccan solitary practitioner). The mystery is pleasurably convoluted with a plethora of potential suspects, and there is strong friendship and a growing romantic element backing up the protagonist as she determines to use both intuition and facts to unravel first one case, then two, despite intensifying danger. I am eager to read others of this series.

Tour: BOUND IN FLAME by Katherine Kayne

5 Stars

A glorious "retelling" as alternate history of the Hawaiian Islands at the turn of the Century (19th-20th), with strong female heroines (multiple), paranormal elements founded and grounded in the Islands, the suffrage for women, and the rights of women to independence and careers; plus romance, animals, danger, and victories. Additionally, the author provides an inspiring and educational afterword about Hawaii's history and royal bloodline.

BOUND IN FLAME will appeal to fans of historic Romantic Suspense (think Phyllis A. Whitney and Victoria Holt), Alternative History (Harry Turtledove), history as-it-should-have-been and as it was, and readers eager for strong female characters.

Review: KITTY CONFIDENTIAL by Molly Fitz

I adore a snarky, self-aware, heroine and when she mixes in with a snarky, egotistical, elitist talking feline, so much the better! An office appliance accident resulting in a near-death experience makes first-person narrator Angie Russo not only an unhappy paralegal, but the world's first "Pet Whisperer" P. I.! First in a series, this is a delightful cozy mystery.

Review: FINDING MIRANDA by Iris Chacon

5 stars

FINDING MIRANDA is Book 1 of the MINOKEE MYSTERIES, set in Little Cypress Forest in North Central Florida, in a tiny insular community, Minokee. No real estate sales, just lifetime living and inheritance. No businesses.

It's problematical not to love a novel featuring a dog, a librarian, a sweet-hearted blind guy, and lots of suspense leavened with gentle humour. Fortunately I really enjoyed the story, and am gleefully anticipating the next (THE MAMMOTH MURDERS, release Nov. 1).

This charming children's picture book is a heartwarming tale of looking for friendship, starring Planet Earth. A lot of emotion here, but a welcome ending. Ideal for a bedtime tale.

Review: TIDE AND PUNISHMENT by Bree Baker

Murder isn't always spur of the moment; sometimes it's been long in the planning...

Christmastime in the quaint community of Charm, North Carolina, an island in the Outer Banks, has an unexpected blessing this year:
Snow! And lots of it! But there's plenty of downside too, including a nasty murder and repeated attempts to frame Fran Swan, descendant of the founding family and aunt of protagonist Everley Swan, who operates the delightful Sun, Sand, and Tea shop. Everley refuses to leave the investigation to hunky police detective Grady Hayes, and her determination puts her and Aunts Fran and Clara smack in the killer's angry sights.

Review_LAST PEN STANDING by Vivian Conroy

5 Stars!

LAST PEN STANDING (I adore that catchy title) is the most delightful first entry in author Vivian Conroy's new STATIONERY SHOP MYSTERY series, and a winning entry it is! Delta resigns from her graphic design career serendipitously to co-own a stationery shop with long-time best friend Hazel. A blessed opportunity for Delta's vision and art talent to be funneled into creative designs and comfy small-town friendships, her new career is conflicted by a local murder. Since Hazel is unfortunately drawn in, Delta speeds to cleverly investigate, companioned by a former police detective and his retired K-9, the enterprising Spud. LAST PEN STANDING delves deep, then leaves the reader feeling very satisfied.

Tour_HALLOWEEN IS MURDER (McKinley Mysteries #11)

McKinley Mysteries by Carolyn Arnold

McKinley Mysteries
by Carolyn Arnold

Vacation is Murder by Carolyn Arnold is a sweet, romantic, thrilling adventure through Cancun’s great resorts to the seedier side of town and out to the temples. It is a fabulous story.
~Baroness’ Book Trove
I was engaged in the story, interested in the dynamics between Sean and Sara, and empathetic to Sean’s regrets over the death of someone he knew.
~Sapphyria’s Books for The Day Job is Murder
Overall, I think Carolyn Arnold’s Money Is Murder is a fun and exciting read. I liked the financial aspect and how each book in the series comes with a theme.
~Nadaness In Motion
Sara and Sean McKinley are now married and are in Cancun having a nice and relaxing honeymoon . . . This was once again a short read, with mystery and a little romance.
~ebook addicts – for Vacation is Murder
Home from honeymoon Sara and Sean are now ready to check out the successful business they inherited . . . This was a good little mystery, one that I thought I had culprit figured out only to be proved wrong!
~~ebook addicts – for Money Is Murder
The mystery is well-written and contains just the right amount of suspense. I was engaged from the beginning and didn’t put the book down until the end.
~Sapphyria’s Books for Vacation is Murder

Something that you can enjoy in an afternoon and walk away feeling good about afterward? How about a dash of humor and romance? If so, meet former detectives Sean and Sara McKinley. When a billionaire leaves them all his money, they no longer have to work, but they find themselves sticking to what they’re good at—solving murders. Undercover, off the books, and around the world, they’ll get to the bottom of things…and romance it up along the way.
This is the perfect book series for fans of Hart to HartCastleColomboMonkRockford FilesPsych, and Magnum PI.
Book Overview (in published order)
  1. The Day Job is Murder (2014)
  2. Vacation is Murder (2014)
  3. Money is Murder (2014)
  4. Politics is Murder (2014)
  5. Family is Murder (2014)
  6. Shopping is Murder (2014)
  7. Christmas is Murder (2014)
  8. Valentine’s Day is Murder (2015)
  9. Coffee is Murder (2015)
  10. Skiing is Murder (2016)
  11. Halloween is Murder (2017)

Beware of all that goes bump in the night…
Sean and Sara McKinley are excited about the haunted house they’ve set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser, but things take a ghoulish turn when the reporter covering their story is found dead. With the media keeping mum about how she died, Sara’s curiosity is piqued, and she convinces Sean to take on the investigation through their PI firm.
But this case is not without its challenges. The police are actively investigating it, as well, and it’s not even clear that the woman was murdered. It will take a little cloak-and-dagger, dress-up, and finesse for the McKinleys to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t the kind to give up.
As they troll for leads and work through the skeletons in the reporter’s closet, they unearth a few suspects, but they’ll need to carve out the whole truth if they’re going to find her killer. If they do so fast enough, there might even be time for a little trick-or-treating.

My Review:

One of my favourite aspects of the McKinley Mystery series (HALLOWEEN IS MURDER is #11) is the fashion in which two disparate individuals can meld and cohese, both in their emotional relationship and in their business, private investigations. Sara and Sean McKinley are each other's Yang and Yin, Anima and Animus. Sara is emotional, empathetic, highly intuitive, and slightly impulsive. Sean is logical, pragmatic, and methodical. In some partnerships, this would mean a lot of (wasted) time butting heads; but Sean and Sara make their differences work in their favor, so there's a 360 degree approach to their investigations. This time the case is the seemingly inexplicable demise of a young local news reporter after filming a segment at the McKinleys' charity benefit Haunted House.

Far from a domestic goddess, Sarah Blair would rather catch bad guys than slave over a hot stove. But when a dangerous murder boils over in Wheaton, Alabama, catching the killer means leaving her comfort zone . . .
Things are finally looking up for Sarah Blair following her unsavory divorce. Settled into a cozy carriage house with her sassy Siamese cat, RahRah, she has somehow managed to hang on to her modest law firm receptionist job and—if befriending flea-bitten strays at the local animal shelter counts—lead a thriving social life. For once, Sarah almost has it together more than her enterprising twin, Emily, a professional chef whose efforts to open a gourmet restaurant have hit a real dead end.
When the president of the town bank and city council is murdered after icing Emily’s business plans, all eyes are on the one person who left the scene with blood on her hands—the twins sharp-tongued mother, Maybelle. Determined to get her mom off the hook ASAP, Sarah must collect the ingredients of a deadly crime to bring the true culprit to justice. But as neighbors turn against her family, can she pare down the suspects before another victim lands on the chopping block?
Includes quick and easy recipes!
