Dark Corner: A Witch Cat Mystery by Vicki Vass

About the Book

Dark Corner: A Witch Cat Mystery

Evil has awoken in Asheville, North Carolina, and Terra Rowan must prepare the Ladies of the Biltmore Society for battle. With her familiar, Pixel, a crooked leg fluffy orange cat, and her apprentice Abigail Oakhaven, a stubborn teenage girl with a bloodline dating back to the beginning of time, she begins their journey. The witch hunters have come to the Appalachian Mountains in search of the last witch of Salem. The magic of the mountains can no longer protect her and her coven. She must travel to the one place on earth that holds the secret to save mankind – Dark Corner.

Combining elements from different cultures, Appalachian folklore, Celtic legends, Native American mysticism, Dark Corner continues its new witch mythology while staying true to the realm of cozy mystery.

Abigail’s Point of View

I never meant to cause all this commotion. It’s not my way. I simply meant to drift in and out of Asheville, North Carolina, on my way somewhere else, not quite sure where but anywhere else. Oops, you don’t know who I am? My name is Abigail Oakhaven, and I appear in the Witch Cat Mystery Books.

No, I’m not a cat but I did just find out I am a witch. Didn’t mean to give that away. Forgive me, if you haven’t read the first book in the series, Bloodline. I’m only 18 and thought I had my whole life in front of me and now I’m learning that I’m not who I thought I was. Not only am I an orphan but I’m not even human. Lot to take in, and it all happened at once.

All these revelations started when I came to Asheville and stumbled upon that cat – Terra. Little did I know that her intervention would change my life. There’s a lot I have to learn and let me tell you, it’s not as easy as it looks in Bewitched. You can’t just twinkle your nose and make things appear. Well, sometimes I can. I’m working on it.

And I like being in Asheville, it’s very cool. There’s brew pubs which I’m not quite old enough for, artists and of course, music. Besides being a witch, I love to play my guitar. It’s the only thing my dad left me and I cherish it. I’m not as good as him but I feel close to him when I am playing. I’m not old enough yet to play the bars here but I sure would like to. Occasionally I play in Pack Square just for fun and to earn a little cash. I don’t tell Terra. She wouldn’t approve. In fact she doesn’t approve of many of the things I want to do. She accuses me of being reckless. Is it my fault that I want to be young while I am young? It’s not my fault she’s like 300 years old.

Besides Terra, my closest companion is Mrs. Twiggs, who is almost as old as her. She runs the local tea shop and offers great insight but she also disapproves of what I want to do almost as much as Terra. I have to sneak out a lot, which is challenging when Pixel is around. The funny little orange cat is almost like a dog.

My best companion is Tracker, the Australian shepherd who discovered me in the woods. He provides me great comfort and follows me wherever I go. I delight in the joy he takes at the simplest things and I feel his blue eyes see into my soul. I pledge to be his companion for life and will take him with me.

Thanks for letting me post here. Hope to meet all of you soon. You can read about our adventures in Dark Corner.

Review of ASK ME NO QUESTIONS by Shelly Noble
(A Lady Dunbridge Mystery)

I view the delightfully independent and free-thinking Lady Dunbridge as the Edwardian English version of Victoria Woodhull, the 19th century American who advocated free love, founded a newspaper, and campaigned for the U.S. Presidency in 1872. Both were “quite the woman,” and both captured a certain spirit which now seems almost blasé, but for their times were truly “off the beaten path,” and more likely to plunge each into scandal and worse trouble, than to achieve their goals. Yet they each persevered.

Lady Dunbridge's much older husband (who acquired her in an arranged marriage) has passed, but why should that derail her life? Her father decides she must return home and live as a dowager, or live in her parents' home, or be exiled to a doddering mad kinswoman in the wilds of Yorkshire. Not any of these for Lady Dunbridge; she's off to America, where her first stop finds her American friend Bev, and Bev's newly-deceased (as of the moment) husband. Suicide? Murdered by his latest mistress? Or something much more mysterious? Lady Dunbridge doesn't think much of the local police detective; she has a much higher opinion of her own intelligence and deductive abilities. As Sherlock might opine, “The game is indeed afoot.”

While the ‘tiger of war’ rages across the Pacific during WWII, eccentric, elderly Agnes Odboddy, ‘fights the war from the home front’. Her patriotic duties are interrupted when she is accused of the Wilkey’s Market burglary.

A traveling carnival with a live tiger joins the parishioner’s harvest fair at The First Church of the Evening Star and Everlasting Light. Accused again when counterfeit bills are discovered at the carnival, and when the war bond money goes missing, Agnes sets out to restore her reputation and locate the money. Her attempts lead her into harm's way when she discovers a friend's betrayal and even more about carnival life than she bargained for.

Granddaughter Katherine's turbulent love triangle with a doctor and an FBI agent rivals Agnes’s own on-again, off-again relationship with Godfrey.

In Faber's latest novel, your favorite quirky character, Mrs. Odboddy, prevails against injustice and faces unexpected challenges . . . and then There Was a Tiger!

Review of MRS. ODBODDY: AND THEN THERE WAS A TIGER
by Elaine Faber

This is Book #3 in a wonderful series! Although this was my introduction to Mrs. Odboddy, I immediately became a staunch and adoring fan, and simply must read the first two books (and any yet to come). Mrs. Odboddy is genuinely adorable, and so are her granddaughter Katherine, and Katherine's new ward, the nine-year-old Maddie, brought from Washington D.C. Eccentric, yes; a mind of her own, yes; but remember Mrs. Odboddy was once an efficient spy in WWI, and is still “a home town patriot.” Right now she is the nemesis of her California community, accused of burglary, lying to the police, counterfeiting—but somebody is framing her, and somebody is not afraid to resort to violence to accomplish goals.

Welcome to River Bluffs, Indiana, a cozy small town populated with charming homes, close-knit families, and the occasional deadly secret . . .

House-flipper Jazzi Zanders and her cousin Jerod have found their latest project. The property, formerly owned by the late Cal Juniper, is filled with debris that must be cleared before the real renovation begins. But a trip to the attic reveals something more disturbing than forgotten garbage—a skeleton wearing a locket and rings that Jazzi recognizes . . .

Tests confirm that the bones belong to Jazzi’s aunt Lynda, who everyone assumed moved to New York years ago after breaking up with Cal. Soon enough, the whole family is involved, sifting through memories and rumors as they try to piece together what really happened to Lynda—and the baby she gave up for adoption. In between investigating and remodeling, Jazzi is falling for the old house’s charms—and for her gorgeous contractor, Ansel. But with surprises lurking in every nook and cranny, a killer might be waiting to demolish her dreams for good . . .

Review of THE BODY IN THE ATTIC
by Judi Lynn

THE BODY IN THE ATTIC is #1 in a new series by Judi Lynn, a series I plan to read in its entirety, as I adored this cozy mystery novel. I should say “multiple mystery,” plus family, friendship, romance. Ms. Lynn is very good writer and certainly maintained my attention and interest throughout, to the point that I was disgruntled to have to set the engrossing story aside for real life
concerns!

In a good-sized city in Indiana, a town that still maintains its “community feel,” Jazzie Xanders and cousin Jerod are “flippers,” who buy houses at estate sales and foreclosures, renovate and improve the structures and interiors, and then sell them for a small profit. Jerod got the house he and his wife and children inhabit this way, and now Jazzie is sure hankering for their newest venture, a beautiful older house in the country who belonged to a wealthy, compassionate individual—who just happened to have been engaged, twenty-six years ago, to Jazzie's mother's older sister.

So many personalities comprise this book, and multiple mysteries, and a lot of deep emotional currents. Ms. Lynn fantastically weaves present and past and gently unravels the mysteries, keeping her readers glued to the page!

Review of O HOLY FRIGHT! By Teresa Trent
(Pecan Bayou Book 8)

In tiny Pecan Bayou, Texas, where everybody knows everybody and they all pull together as a community, the Christmas Festival is of huge importance (despite the lack of snow) and the citizens look forward to it all year long. Betsy Livingston, her weatherman husband, and their three children are all anticipating the Festival and the Holiday, and Betsy is rushing to photograph the outlandish lights display some of the residents manage, and to think of some new recipes and helpful hints for her newspaper column, “The Happy Hinter.” This year, though, all is not well, and something wrong is stirring in the town. The community's beloved former mailman is shot, and Betsy's Aunt Maggie (widowed sister of the Chief of Police, Betsy's father) is accused. Throughout the town are sightings of what appears to be a “Christmas Creeper,” and the late mailman's neighbor, a female woodworker, is dealing with a drug-abusing daughter suddenly returned and an abusive ex-husband also suddenly reappearing—just after she inherits. Somebody shot the ex-mailman, but who? And why? And who is “casing” the community? Betsy is determined to put her reportorial instincts to efficient use.

The Pecan Bayou Series brings cozy mysteries in the kind of town where readers wish they could live. Teresa Trent has a gentle writing style to keep her fans turning the pages in delight and intrigue.

Slay Bells (A Christmas Village Mystery)

Cozy Mystery

Brand New Series

Better Mousetrap Books (November 23, 2018)

Print Length: 273 pages

Digital ASIN: B07HGG7ZFR

‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through the village, the night settled in over swirling-smoke chimneys; the air was alive with pine and holly, with sugar and cinnamon and cider, by golly!

Along snowy lanes and through shadows it crept, past windows behind which each villager slept, where sleeping dogs lie and cats rest a’purring—

Tonight, in Christmas Village, a killer is stirring.

Welcome to Christmas Village, a magical hamlet where even in December the roses hold their luster and bees buzz among the bluebells. You’re just in time for the week-long Christmas Festival, and nowhere is Christmas celebrated with such unrestrained merriment as the village which bears its name. Mayor Cobblestone and Sheriff Fell will be somewhere nearby, doing all they can to make sure you’re safe during your stay.

Provided you haven’t booked a room at Plum Cottage.

Nestled betwixt an opulent garden with meandering footpaths and an ancient grove of plum trees, Rose Willoughby’s boarding house is plum-full with lodgers. There are no vacancies, but just wait. Soon there will be one…and another…and another.

Presently lodging at the cottage are: the juggler, the acrobat, the magician, the psychic, the strongman, the manager, and the pretty assistant. In town as festival entertainment they’ve each brought their own bag of tricks. And a closetful of skeletons.

When the entertainers begin dying in inexplicable ways, some villagers believe a beast from old village lore is the culprit. The sheriff knows better, but he’s just as helpless to catch the invisible killer as are the town folk with their eyes to the sky in search of a flying creature. But our mysterious murderer hasn’t counted on yet another lodger coming to the cottage: Maribel Claus.

Short as a stump, round as a wheel, sweet as a candy cane, and a sharp as a whip, Maribel loves a good puzzle. But has she finally met her match at Plum Cottage?

Can you figure out whodunit before Maribel does? If you’re up to the challenge, here’s your first clue—the key to unlocking the secret of the murderer’s identity lies in figuring out how the murders were committed. Good luck!

About the Author

T.C. Wescott was born in Missouri but has lived in Oklahoma most of his life. Like pretty much every author who has ever breathed, he is an avid reader. His favorites are classic mysteries from the Golden Age, as well as just before or just after that period (which is widely considered the period between the two World Wars). His first mystery novel, Running from Scissors, was published in July 2018 and will be the first of at least three books in the Running Store Mystery series.

The Christmas Village Mystery series will launch in November of the same year with the debut title Slay Bells. The formula for his books is simple - mixing the classic, traditional detective fiction standards with all the trappings of the modern cozy mystery.

Wescott is also (under another name) the author of two award-winning non-fiction books as well as a slew of essays and articles.

Review of SLAY BELLS by T. C. Wescott

This nifty little Christmastide cozy is A Christmas Village Mystery #1. Christmas Village is a very magical place, where special snow and beautiful flowers exist year round, villagers are kind and loving, visitors are in awe; and where Mr. and Mrs. Claus live. Maribel Claus is a delightfully winning personality, an amateur sleuth, extraordinarily observant, a great cook, and the devoted owner of two ferrets. When her friend Rose Willoughby's Bed and Breakfast—Plum Cottage Inn—hosts a carnival troupe, Maribel leaps to help out, especially needed after Rose sprains her ankle hanging the Mistletoe.

Unfortunately all is not sweetness and light at this Christmastide, and Rose soon discovers she is harbouring a murderous viper. The Sheriff is well-meaning and dedicated, but Christmas Village can be thankful Maribel Claus is on the trail.

Review of THE KILLER CHRISTMAS SWEATER CLUB

by Terry Ambrose

(A Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast Mystery #3)

Christmastide can be a real killer; and not always because of family get-togethers, overeating, and last-minute purchasing stress. Sometimes a grinch is murdered, just because the time is right. But often, suspicion falls on the innocent, and somebody's got to investigate.

Alex (Alexandra), a smart and clever ten-year-old, loves life in Seaside Cove at the Bed-and-Breakfast her dad now owns. She can't imagine anything better except for Dad Rick marrying Marquetta, the wonderful lady who is the B&B's cook and Alex's good friend. Alex is not going to let a murder intervene between Rick and Marquetta if she has to investigate herself.
