Hold your flying horses!

Barnabas Tew and Wilfred Colby are back, and, once again, they're in a bit of a pickle.

Barnabas and Wilfred, two earnest but bumbling Victorian detectives, travel through the Nine Worlds of Norse mythology, trying to stave off the impending end of the world – an event which the locals call Ragnarok. This time, however, the intrepid twosome has some help: a brave Viking seer named Brynhild and her flying horse.

Can the two plucky detectives and the fearsome Brynhild outwit those who would bring about Ragnarok? Will they survive the harsh conditions and terrifying creatures of the Norse afterlife?

Will they save the world…again?

About the Author

Columbkill Noonan has an M.S. in Biology (she has, in turn, been a field biologist, an environmental compliance inspector, and a lecturer of Anatomy and Physiology). When she's not teaching or writing, she can usually be found riding her rescue horse, Mittens, practicing yoga (on the ground, in an aerial silk, on a SUP board, and sometimes even on Mittens), or spending far too much time at the local organic, vegan market. “Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Nine Worlds” is the second book in the best-selling Barnabas Tew series, and it launches September 4! The author, Columbkill Noonan, stops by today to talk about the book and, um, groundhogs?

There is a groundhog who lives under our back deck. She’s lived there for years, and just waddles around doing groundhog-type things. Over the years she’s gotten rather, well, round (probably because I do quite a bit of gardening, and so there is always plenty of green things to eat. And flower-things. Boy, does she love to eat my pansies!)

Anyway, it didn’t really make much of an impact on us when, earlier this year, she got a bit rounder. We didn’t pay it much mind at all. But then suddenly, one day, there was no longer just our one happy, round, pansy-eating groundhog waddling around the back yard.

No, now there were six of them….five round little babies and one tired mama trying to keep up with them all. So, of course, everyone in the house spent quite a lot of time watching everyone outside of the house. Me, my husband, and our three cats watched from the window as the five little marauders ran pell-mell all over the yard, rolling around, running this way and that, and sticking their noses into anything and everything. We watched as they discovered the herb pots, and one little monster sat there, hind legs out in front of him, and happily devoured every last bit of dill I had planted the day before. We watched as two of them had a play fight and rolled, obliviously, right over my fledgling tomato plants, snapping them off at the stem. We watched as they gleefully ate up the organic greens I bought at the grocery to distract them from my kale, and then watched as they ate up all the kale, too.

If one fuzzy little guy went one way, the others went the other. All day long. It was chaos, and it was hilarious.

But the funniest part of it was poor Mama Groundhog’s reaction. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that she was exactly like Barnabas (the eponymous character in the “Barnabas Tew” series), and that all that chaos was precisely what Barnabas went through in the books.

Mama Groundhog, you see, had a routine. And she really liked that routine. Go out, eat some greens, get a little sun, go back under the deck. She’d done it for years. And now she was stuck chasing little lunatics all over the yard, making sure they didn’t get into too much trouble. If you had seen the look on her face…well, it looked very disapproving, just like Barnabas’ face does when he’s confronted with a particularly unruly character.

Just like Mama Groundhog, Barnabas is put in a situation way out of his comfort zone, when all he really wants is his nice, orderly routine. He’s whisked out of Victorian London and forced to contend with first the mythological gods and goddesses of the Ancient Egyptians (in “The Case of the Missing Scarab”) and then those of Norse mythology (in “The Case of the Nine Worlds”). But he rises to the occasion as best he can. He deals with all the chaos that comes his way…but I’m pretty certain he makes the same face that Mama Groundhog does.

As did our poor, beleaguered groundhog. All of her babies grew up, got nice and round themselves, and waddled off to make their own homes. All is well, and now she can go back to her comfortable routine, with no craziness to contend with. Will Barnabas be so lucky? I think not, at least not for awhile…I have big plans for him, you see!

Review: BARNABAS TEW AND THE CASE OF THE NINE WORLDS by Columbkill Noonan

You know Holmes and Watson. You know Tommy and Tuppence. You know Mr. and Mrs. North. Now meet probably the two most unlikely hero-detectives ever, who give new meaning to The Fool card in Tarot. Barnabas Tew and Wilfred Colby are the Laurel and Hardy of World-Saving and Apocalypse-Averting. In their first book they were killed by a mummy at the behest of Anubis so that they could enter the Egyptian land of the dead. Now they come to Asgard because Ragnarok is nigh. Of course, the two are in total ignorance of Norse mythology (and just want to return to London, if they even can), but before very long their education will improve.

I admire the subtle humour Barnabas and Wilfred engender, against the backdrop of the solemn and serious Norse gods and deceased Vikings of Valhalla. My education in these topics increased also. I wonder into what mythology these feckless heroes will travel next?
